Surfside Pirate History

Located on the Texas Gulf Coast, the island community of Surfside Beach, Texas was the location where the “Original 300 Settlers” first stepped off the Schooner The Lively and onto Texas soil in the year of Eighteen Hundred and twenty one.  Eleven years later the first shots were fired between the Texas Settlers and Mexican troops took place on this same very island when 112 Texans lead by Stephen F. Austin took over the Mexican port entrance at Fort Velasco.

Yet before these important events in Texas history there were Pirates in these here waters.  Infamous Privateers Jean Lafitte and Louis Michael Aury made these waters their home in the early 1800s. Rumors suggest that Jean Lafitte used the mouth of the Brazos as a rendezvous and buried treasure along its banks.  Pirates, smugglers and blockade runners braved the treacherous waters of San Luis Pass as a back door into Galveston Bay.  Surfside Beach and Brazoria County have 22 miles of beaches between the Brazos River and San Luis Pass.
